RE-Stock London

RE-Stock London Housing Competition – 2020

Shortlisted

During the summer of 2020 I enlisted recent Kansas State University graduates Mahruf Kabir and Nazmun Akter Pia as well as their colleague Marzia Chowdhury, a PhD candidate at the University of Kansas – who is focused on social housing — to collaborate on the RE-Stock London Housing Competition, sponsored by Bee Breeders and the Bartlett School of Architecture. We selected Smithson’s Robin Hood Gardens (a notable modernist housing complex recently half-demolished) as the site of our design intervention, both proposing modifications to the remaining housing block and adding more housing and mixed-use programs to the site. I served mainly in a critic and advisor role, allowing Kabir to lead the design and production efforts with Akter Pia and Chowdhury. Additionally, we were able to briefly consult with Neal Deeley, Principal and Founder of Metropolitan Workshop, LLC of London who is collaborating with Hayworth Tompkins on a “real” commissioned mixed-use project for the site.

Our entry was Shortlisted and was only one of six US submissions advancing to the second round.
